the best of you 2009: Blog!

So my friend Gwen Bell, a real whirlwind in her own right, is leading this little thing you might have heard about – The Best of 2009 Blog Challenge. I’ve been sitting back and watching it take off, waiting for the meaty topics, the ones where I had something to add. And now – Day 7 – it’s here.

I’m supposed to pick the best blog I started reading in 2009.

The funniest part of this topic? I started reading this blog because its author found me through Gwen and followed me on Twitter. I’m not what people call a ‘social media expert’, even though I’ve lots of experience dealing with social this and social that, so I tend to be conservative about my own follow choices. Got a blog linked from Twitter? Rest assured I’ll check it out before I decide whether or not to follow you.

And that’s how I found this particular blog. What struck me most – other than how much I loved her poetry and the wry humor sneaking around within the lines of her posts – was that she used her writing the same way I do – to make sense of the world.

She delves deep into herself, sometimes baring quite a bit of who she is and who she’s been in the process. And comes out with greater insight and intuition. I often found myself thinking that if I’d been in her shoes, I’d have written almost the same thing.

But she offered a perspective slightly shifted from mine, just far enough away to grant me new eyes on my own life – which for the first eight months of the year had been filled with craziness and challenges.

The discussions we’ve had and the blog entries she’s posted have inspired me to write quite a few of my more recent posts; so much so that we joke about being tag-team bloggers. Kinda cute, isn’t it?

Even before our twitter connection bloomed into this incredible and inspiring friendship, though, hers was the blog I always checked first thing, just to see if she’d posted a new poem, or reached a new epiphany, or delved deeply into the questions of living in this world.

I should warn you – you’ll be smitten – and watch out for the food posts. She’ll have your mouth watering in no time. And follow it up with an entry that’ll have your eyes watering. And follow that up with one that’ll have you falling off your ottoman with laughter (oh wait, that’s what she does!).

Enough with the introductions. The winner of this year’s Most Joyful Blog To Read goes to…
